The band gap excitons in PbI2

Abstract

Reflection spectra of the layered semiconductor PbI2 have been measured in the band gap region at 1.5 °K. Unlike previous results, they can be interpreted in terms of a normal ( 1 n2) Wannier exciton series. The corresponding ground state ionization energy is found to be about 30 meV. The multitude of exciton lines observed in most crystals can be ascribed to polytypism.
