One of the most challenging problems in turbulent mixing flows is the prediction of operation of turbulent combustion systems. Typical systems, such as furnaces, gas turbines, and internal combustion engines, combine intense turbulence with large heat release from finite rate chemical kinetics. Accordingly, successful numerical models of such systems require submodels for the turbulence, for the chemical kinetics, and for their interaction. With improvement in numerical techniques and with the speed and accessibility of computers, submodels with increasing sophistication are being developed. In this paper, we report progress in the development of a full second-order closure for turbulent reacting flows.
