Life cycle assessment of biobutanol for use in transportation applications

Abstract

Biobutanol fuel, an alterative to gasoline, is produced from a fermentation process similar to that of bioethanol using agricultural feedstocks. Well-to-pump fossil energy use, petroleum use, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for biobutanol were studied. The results were compared with similar scenarios for bioethanol and also to other life cycle studies on biobutanol. Biobutanol can provide similar environmental performance as bioethanol when accounting for co-products. The results showed higher energy use and GHG emissions than those of previous studies due to the more conservative assumptions used.
