The possibilities of the STO hydrogenation over a Pt-Pd catalyst supported on activated carbon to produce fuel with low content of aromatics, sulfur, and nitrogen were studied. The STO composition was 9.92 wt % paraffins, 1.91 wt % olefins, 27.3 wt % aromatics, 4.6 wt % oxygenated compounds, 27.6 wt % cycloalkanes, 2.07 wt % sulfur compounds, and 1.33 wt % nitrogen compounds. After hydrogenation, a significant amount of the heaviest fraction of STO (bi-aromatic and tri-aromatic compounds) was converted. The retention time of the products was lower than that of the feed and, as a consequence, the boiling point of the products was also lower. Benzothiazole some benzeneamides were hydrodesulfurated/hydrodenitrogenated. This may be due to the strong effect as adsorbent of the activated carbon, which enhances the catalyst HDS and HDN activity.
