Abstract

A variable grid finite-difference scheme is developed for 2D and 3D elastodynamic modeling. The modeling results show that waves smoothly pass through the variable-sized grid region and the scheme appears to be numerically stable. This scheme adds more flexibility and efficiency to finite-difference wave equation modeling as the grid spacing can be varied according to the material properties and the model geometry. Some preliminary tests also show that a similar approach can be used in 3D viscoelastic wave equation modeling.
