Enhanced environmental mobility of carbon nanotubes in the presence of humic acid and their removal from aqueous solution

Abstract

A study was conducted to investigate the environmental behavior of carbon nanotubes (CNT), released in powder form into aqueous media and to develop a method a method for removing humic acid (HA)-stabilized CNT from the aqueous media. Single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) and multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) were considered for the investigation. The SWCNTs were synthesized by the high-pressure decomposition of carbon monoxide (CO), while MWCNTs were produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Dispersions of both CNTs were prepared, using HA at environmentally relevant concentrations. The objective of the study was to investigate conditions that will lead to environmental mobility of HA concentrations for dispersing CNTs. UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy was also used to determine the dispersion of CNTs in aqueous solution in the presence of HA.
