Abstract

We suggest that the presence of dead zooplankton in samples from a Norwegian fjord could be ascribed to freshwater induced mortality. Discharge from a hydroelectric power plant generated an inward countercurrent which transported plankton towards the freshwater source. In the turbulent mixing zone near the freshwater outlet, zooplankton could presumably not avoid vertical mixing into low salinity water, where they were killed by osmotic stress.
