Abstract

Well-defined graft copolymers can be synthetized along lines developed for the preparation of comb-shaped homopolymers. When anionic polymerization techniques are used narrow molecular-weight distribution backbones and grafts can be coupled with high efficiency resulting in graft copolymers with a predetermined number of branches and narrow molecular-weight distribution. In the reported experiments, by performing light scattering studies on the graft copolymers the overall radius of gyration as well as the radii of gyration of the two constituting polymers can be determined. The experimental results are compared with predictions of the random-walk model for graft copolymers.
