The performance of styrene-methyl methacrylate (SMMA) random and block copolymers and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as compatibilizers for poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/polystyrene (PS) blends was investigated. The morphology of compatibilized interfaces with block SMMA copolymers containing 50% of S in composition shows spherical structures due to micelles formation. A smooth interface is observed when random SMMA with the same S content is located at the interface. When observed by transmission electron microscope, the addition of 2% of this block copolymer to the immiscible blend of PVDF/PS has the same compatibilizing effect as that obtained by the addition of 50% homopolymer PMMA.
