Abstract

The primary intent of the present paper is to critically review and tabulate the reliable data pertaining to chain flexibility of polymethacrylates. We also attempt to elucidate trends regarding the effect of the nature of the side group on chain flexibility. We give a strong preference to data obtained by viscosity measurements at or near the θ condition. We rework the data, making corrections for polydispersity and deviation from the theta state. We also apply a consistent value (2.5 × 1021) for Flory's universal viscosity factor. It is our opinion that such an approach should better facilitate a relative comparison of substituent effects on chain flexibility.
