Abstract

In this paper a simulation is presented for the transitional behavior of the packing stage for a Generalized Newtonian Fluid whose compressible behavior is considered to obey the Spencer-Gilmore equation of state. An analysis of the packing behavior of thermoplastic and thermosetting polymer melts is given for disk and rectangular mold cavity geometries. The general governing non-linear partial differential equation has been solved using a stable explicit finite difference numerical procedure. Generally, the rheological and compressible properties of the melt exhibit the greatest influence on mold packing. The pressure within the cavity reaches equilibrium in a very short period of time.
