Adsorption-Driven Heat Pumps: The Potential of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Abstract

The potential of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for adsorption-driven heat pumps is discussed. Three different mechanisms for water adsorption in MOFs can be distinguished, such as adsorption on the metallic cluster, which modifies the first coordination sphere of the metal ion, layer or cluster adsorption in pores, and capillary condensation in pores. Cluster adsorption is prevalent over layer formation when water is concerned, as most MOFs consist of aromatic ligands, which are hydrophobic in nature.
